摘要:

Evolutionary strategies have been intensively studied by means of investigating the wild nature as well as genetic analyses according to the sequences of DNA, RNA and/or protein. Nevertheless, demonstration of the mechanisms involved in evolution is still short of direct evidence. In the latest decades, mimicking the evolutionary processes in laboratory turned to be a powerful approach to catch the linkage between genotype and phenotype in a real-time manner. In the present talk, several different types of evolution experiments with the laboratory E. coli strains, performed under either the regular or high selection pressure, or the continuous or oscillated environment, will be introduced. Changes in growth fitness, thermal niche, mutation rate, or resource utilization efficiency were observed in the evolved E. coli strains, respectively. Multilevel analyses from molecular mechanism to genomic reorganization not only confirmed the fact of genetic changes induced phenotypic variation but also provided the evidence of the cost-saving survival strategies during evolution. Besides the experimental demonstration of evolution mechanisms, these studies offered somehow conceptual insights into both the coordination among the global parameters involved in the evolutionary changes and the living cell as a homeostatic system.
